What You Should Know about Short Term Disability Insurance Pregnancy

What is Short Term Disability Insurance?

When hearing upon short term disability insurance, most of the people might think that it referred to coverage for a condition that causes an employee couldn’t do their core for a short period. In this way, any condition such as illness, injury, workplace accident, surgery recovery, and many others that can be included under this insurance policy as that condition lets employees unable to work. However, in the real application, short term disability insurance is mostly taken to cover maternity and delivery leave under the policies. Short-term disability plan is a big help for every employee to maintain their productivity. The plan allows the employee to leave for a while from their job while keep maintaining their position at the company. So, after they are recovering from illness or delivery process, they can return to their work as soon as possible.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

Not only short term disability benefits, but you can also get covered under FMLA. Under this law, employees have right to take up to 12 weeks of leave for certain family or medical emergencies. The laws also guarantee your position after you able to return to your work. However, the laws may be different in every state, so you need to recheck whether there are some specific requirements where you are eligible. In some states, the law only required the employers to provide for unpaid leave to their employees. But in some other states, the laws have granted more benefits for employees, including the short-term disability benefits. So, the employees still get paid including for pregnancy leave. Under Family and Medical Leave Act, you are eligible if you meet some certain conditions. First, if you are working for a business with 50 or more employees including all employees on the payroll such as part-timers and those on leave of absence within a 75-mile radius. Second, you have worked for at least 12 months for the business. Last, you have worked at least 1,250 hours in between 12 months before taking your leave.

How Does the Insurance Cover for Maternity Leave?

Every short term disability insurance offers different planning, including for maternity leave. However, many plans offer only less than employees’ full salary when they are using this insurance coverage. For the period, employers may offer only about 6-8 weeks leaves depending on the method of delivery. For normal delivery, the employees commonly just get six weeks leave benefits. Meanwhile, delivery via Caesarean section grants employees with two additional weeks.

During your maternity leave, most of the short term disability insurance policies only cover for 2/3 of regular salary. If it is less than three months, some companies may give them for full parental leave for full-time employees. However, specific health condition may also influence the coverage. How You Count Your Benefits?

When will you start receiving the benefits? Well, typically the short term disability benefits begin on the day of delivery. However, every plan may have the different starting point of benefits receiving. Usually, you can disable from work on a week before expected or actual date of delivery after your doctor already gives certification for leave. Meanwhile, you can even receive the benefits before one week if you have medical complications that make you unable to do your job and your doctor already provides medical records to do so.

There is a term called elimination period under short term disability insurance pregnancy policies. The elimination period is a short period when you have to wait before beginning to receive the benefit checks. Here, you need to confirm with your company or insurance agent to check the plan to determine your elimination period length. The employees or applicants are the ones who determine their elimination period. You need to take a note that a more extended elimination period means lower premium costs and vice versa.

However, longer elimination period also means lower benefits received. If you take a standard 6-weeks of leaves, a plan with 3-month elimination period gives you no payment at all. Meanwhile, if you take only 7-days elimination period, you can get a net of 5-weeks benefits. For a sample case, an employee gets 7-days elimination period or period between the disability start date and first payment date. Her delivery date is on April 1, so she starts gain benefits on April 8 until her six-week leaves after delivering date end on May 12. So in this scenario, she only receives five weeks of disability benefits.

What Happened if The Employers Don’t Offer Short-Term Disability?
